Program Description

In a world of global competition, with new products developing at an unparalleled speed, highly skilled and adaptive electronics engineering specialists have many exciting and productive career opportunities available to them in diverse fields such as semiconductor chip manufacturing, telecommunications, computer networking, transportation, medicine and space exploration.

The Electronics Engineering Technology diploma at the School of Engineering & Technology blends design and business skills. Graduates may implement and extend current technology, develop prototypes, optimize designs or manage system operations. They take a hands-on approach to applying engineering methods and principles, and are typically called on to perform test engineering and evaluation activities, as well as to provide manufacturing support and quality assurance. They often guide concepts developed by senior electronics engineers from the design to the creation of actual products or services.

Specific courses include circuit analysis, electronic and digital circuits, analog communications, introduction to microcontrollers, introduction to networking, analog signal processing and telecommunications technology. Many classes integrate lab work, allowing students to test and apply new knowledge right away.

The program’s supportive faculty are successful, dedicated professionals who also teach in the degree program.

Students who graduate from the diploma program and obtain a GPA of 3.0 or higher can opt to be admitted directly into the Bachelor of Technology (Electronics Engineering Technology) program, which they can complete after 5 additional terms of study.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the Electronics Engineering Technology diploma program, graduates will be able to:

  • Use C++ and draw from a foundation of mathematics, physics and computer science fundamentals.
  • Apply differential calculus and physics in the solution of engineering problems.
  • Understand the fundaments of electronic and digital circuit analysis and design and analog signal processing.
  • Understand microcontroller systems fundamentals and their programming techniques.
  • Understand the characteristics of communications media and the principles of networking.
  • Understand digital systems and their analysis, control systems, microwave communications using waveguides and reduced instruction set computer devices.
  • Understand the basic principles of project management.
  • Write business documents that are informative and persuasive, including formal research proposals and investigative reports.
  • Execute a career planning or career advancement strategy. Graduates will also have created a portfolio highlighting their achievements, goals and professional development plans.
  • Understand the fundamental ethical and legal principals applicable to businesses in Canada.
  • Demonstrate what they have learned through a capstone senior project where they work with a team to design, evaluate and present a new product prototype.
